Deluxe Steering Wheel

Post by MaxKlinger »

I'd like to have a pre-1971 Deluxe steering wheel on my truck. That's the one with the horn ring in it, like the blue one pictured on the right on this page:

http://www.fordification.com/67-72ID.htm

Is it possible to add a horn ring to any three-spoke steering wheel, or is the wheel itself different between the Deluxe and the standard wheel?

Thanks!

I'm quite certain they are the same wheel.

They are the same except for the horn ring. Tony you can order these steering wheels through NPD with the horn ring. Look on page 79 and 80 in the NPD catalog. The horn right is around $70 and the steering wheel is from $159 to $199. I'm going junkin' this weekend and I'll keep my eyes open for one.

Well I'm sure the reproduction deluxe wheels are beautiful but $300 when all is said and done is pretty expensive. That's why I was looking to recondition an old standard three-spoke (like the one you have, Eric) and then add a horn ring to it if possible.

Mjhaltom (project Uncle Darrell) made a good suggestion, about getting an older wheel and filling in the cracks with JBWeld. Then it could be sanded smooth, a few coats of paint and a repro horn ring to dress it up should make a nice looking wheel for about half of what a brand new wheel would cost.

Eric if you see anything out there let me know, I appreciate it.

I still have this wheel if you want it. I'll let you know what I find this weekend.

when and if you change your wheel you have to grind off that stub on your steering wheel shaft in order for the horn ring to fit on the wheel.

i would say 72 up into the 80s they made a wheel like that. with the cruise in the horn button area. look for a part number inside the pad next time you take it off.

Yeah I'm aware of that. It should be relatively straightforward. Thanks fordman.
