C6 and shift needle

Post by import600 »

Ok so a little background, the colum is from a 73-77. It's an auto column. The transmission is from a 71 torino. I mixed and matched parts to get to where I am now.

Now my problem. The needle doesn't line up when I shift the truck. It'll go through all of the gears and the needle will only go over to the D. Now I'm wondering if the shift lever on the transmission is different for cars than trucks. Like the truck lever is longer? What do you guys think?

From what I have seen they are about the same. Unless you have somthing odd. Sounds like your column is doing somthing funny.

i think it does have something to do with the length of the rod but i haven't paid alot of attention to that recently. i do remeber years ago seeing one from a car that was shorter. but i could be wrong also . but it does make sence.

It would have to do with the car-type transmission-mounted shift lever being shorter. Swap it out for a truck-type shift lever and things will be back to normal. Or you could just weld an extension onto the car-type lever, though it might take some trial-and-error to find the right spot.

Here's a thread with a related (but slightly different) topic:

Ok so if I read that thread right, you've got to pull the pan to get at the shift lever? hmm if so, I may just leave it the way it is for a while.

Yeah, you have to pull the pan and drop the valve body. The shift lever is held in with a large nut. It's not hard, just kinda messy.

My issues have always been when I try to seal the pan back up always have ended up with leaks. Only done it a few times though , I guess its always worth another shot.

i think i would try to lengthen the outer rod first. before i started messing with the internals of the trans. i hate pulling trans pans off also. but it can be done if done correctly and have no leaks.
