power steering pump on f250 is dead - question

Post by hedz »

can a power steering pump destroy a steering box after it commits suicide?

should i put a cheapy filter on the low pressure line after i plug in the new power steering pump, run it briefly after bleeding, then remove the filter? do any of yall run a filter on your power steering?

the lines blew out on the power steering on the f250. i replaced both lines. 2 months later the compression line blew out again. i retightened the line. 24 hours later the bearings in the power steering pump went kapoop. the pump is deffinitely bad. it is screaming like a banshee and when i did the last adjustment on the line i added fresh fluid which was once clear but is now muddy.

i am worried that the pump may have compromised the steering box. the truck still turns fine. i have to put about 10 more miles on the bad steering pump while i source parts and errands. i have no choice. everything i own is breaking down.

doing timing cover gasket put that off way too long) and wheel cylinder on f100 and power steering pump on f250 tomorrow

yall are going to love this. i didn't bother with the filter. i went to autozone. i picked up the first remanned power steering pump from them. i install it. run it. has a cracked housing. remove it. return it. get another one. install it. bad bearing. 3rd one is on the way tomorrow. american manufacturing is in a sad state. i'm worn out. didn't get anything done today. going to lay down. :zz:

I hear you loud and clear on the string of bad parts. That's why I try to rebuild them myself whenever possible, be it an a/c compressor or p/s pump or whatever. Quality has been on the slide for a long time.

As far as the fluid in the gear goes, yes you should flush that out, do that by taking the return hose to the pump, putting it in a bucket, pour fluid into the reservoir while the engine is running or cranking. Can be a bit tricky (and messy). Might be a good time to invest in a remote starter (button type - tool). And yes, an inline filter is a good idea. Cardone sells them on RockAuto, I put one in when I did the hydroboost on my 84 Olds 98 Diesel, simple enough install and you can pull the filter out without pulling it all apart, has a disc type setup held in by a clip, the body stays inline, filter comes out.

I can't tell you whether your gear is bad or not yet, personally, I'd get a good pump, flush it, install the inline filter and run it.

Remember to use Type F trans fluid in the p/s system.

the gear box is fine. i flushed all the dirty fluid out. i left the cap on the return on the pump. i extended the return hose into a bottle. the third pump was the charm.

I put a remanufactured pump from Oreillys on a couple of years ago. Last few months I have been battling a small leak. Changes return hose. Put Teflon on threads on high pressure side.... still small leak. I think its from around the base of the tube that connects to return hose... Got tires of messing with it so sprayed it with a can of Rustoleum rubber sealant I had on the shelf! Lets see how that stuff works! could be a miracle cure for leaks!

make sure the oring is on there. it even helps if you put the same i.d. oring on there but a thicker one. teflon tape won't help. i tried a high pressure hose on the f100 a while ago with tons of teflon tape because the new hose i bought from oreillys didn't come with the oring on it. i then tried liquid electric tape. still a leak. finally went and bought a oring and gave oreillys a call and told them that i heard someone was stealing the orings off their high pressure hoses :x

got to have that oring on there. it doesnt appear like it would help at all but it does.

Never noticed any orings... What is the size? Does it go between the flared end of the tubing and the mating part on the pump?

not sure of the size. it goes right past the threaded part on the high pressure hose that threads into the the power steering pump. just take your hose into a hardware store or eyeball it and grab a few. our orings are .99

I have the Saginaw pump have been using regular power steering fluid. Seems to work fine but is a little loud. Is using this fluid going to destroy the pump.

i just put in 4th power steering pump in the f250. this last one i bought from napa. apparently all of these pumps are made by a1cardone. napa recognized that there is a built in filter on the low pressure side. they looked the exact same as far as branding - the autozone and napa pump. but the napa pump had different model model number. anywho i put the magnetic filter on the low pressure side mentioned. also put in lubegard power steering additive. makes some great transmission additives which i have used for a long time. the only think i don't like about this additive is that it is burned toasty red. so how the **** am i supposed to know if my fluid is toast? whatever. i think that the power steering additive and the filter combined with some atf from napa saved the day. i used a turkey baster this time too instead of capping off the end of a tube with my thumb in order to make the level perfect. thanks for all your advice. i'm expecting this one to last a bit longer. :fr:
