Just go for the AOD. There is no vacuum modulator so you can do anything to your motor without worrying about it at all.
My buddy has a 700 hp 66 mustang with a built AOD to handle it all and the trans was about $1200 including a new T/C and core charge.

AODs blow... (litterally) Unless you invest 1k into them in new hard parts. The 700R4 is a bit more stout in stock form... but if you want either to last behind somehting that makes torque... you will need to have it built.
Unless you need or want the lower 1rst gear of the 700R4... I'd go with the built AOD. You're gonna be spending $2500 with either one anyway...
Oh yeah... SHIFT KIT. SHIFT KIT. SHIFT KIT. Soft shifts kill trannies.

Forgive me for skiimming and maybe repeating someone else. I think a built 700R-4 would be a better choice that a Ford AOD. The AODs have lots of problems and they cost more to build. Plus I think the Ch**y tranny has a lower first gear.
Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.

Ok guys I finally contacted the gear vendor dealers and they quoted me 2,659 dollars not including shipping. These guys are seriosly druck I want overdrive but at that cost I could just put a down payment on a motorcycle. I was told there is a few manual transmission that has overdrive and will bolt up to the FE's. The only ones I know of are the toploaders and T18/T19's, can any one clear this up for me. I don't mind swapping over to manual if it will help gas and performance.

I say go with the built 700R4. I think the aod is junk. They are extremely expensive to build. Generally expect $1400-$1800 just for a stock rebuild of your tranny. You can get a built 700R4 straight away for a lot less. Plus the ratios and shift points on the 700 are more favorable. Last I knew you could not hold an aod in any gear past about 4400 rpms. Maybe a modified one.
Another annoyance of the AOD is the delay when you shift it into gear. Every time I get in one (we have about 10) I drop it in and press the gas, only to realize it has hit about 2500 before the stupid thing has had time to take it's leisure getting into gear.Annoying

You have one messed up AOD my friend. My AOD in my Bronco shifts about 1900 at the latest. Also I have revved my AOD past 4500 before with no ill effects. And mine is behind a motor Ford never dared to put an AOD behind in a truck, a 351W and not just a fully stock one but I have all the normal mods I can get away with here in CA. My AOD has never been rebuilt and I am at 150K now.willowbilly3 wrote:I say go with the built 700R4. I think the aod is junk. They are extremely expensive to build. To rebuild my AOD with a deep pan, better bands/clutches, shift kit, etc. with them removing/installing it in my truck was $1100 out the door. And mine's more of a PITA since it's 4x4.
