240-6 heater hoses

Post by takehikes »

So two different problems, truck does not come up to temperature and no cab heat.
I got to looking and I think my heater hoses are incorrect. The hose coming out of the thermostat neck does not have the heater valve in it. Shouldnt the valve be in that hose?
I changed the radiator to amuch larger aluminum one and hoses and water pump and tstat. However I think the tstat is the wrong one so I am putting a 195 in this weekend. I had replaced all the hoses and put them back as they had previously been but realized I think they were put in wrong by the previous owner. Then last night my heater core started leaking so I'm replacing it too.
Im hoping the tstat will solve the engine not coming to temperature and changing the hoses location and heater core solve my no heat......

Any suggstions?

I believe you're on the right track with the thermostat and the heater core. You're also probably gonna find the other major issue when you pull the heater core out-that the air flow across the core was completely blocked due to leaf debris that gets in via the fresh air duct outside cowl area. Take your time and get a shop vac hose and air pressure to really clean the area good before you just throw a heater core into it or you stand to have the new one lose airflow across it as well. Also highly recommend getting a magnetic guard sold on fleabay, (or make your own as I did from an old magnetic sign) to block your outside fresh air vents to prevent the leaves from ever being an issue again, (if you find that was the issue in the first place).
"An ounce of prevention..." will save you a lot of work down the road.
Also don't forget to get some body putty to seal around the heater plenum bolts and heater core piping, (wrap around the bolts and piping before you slide the unit back into the cab-then also wrap a small amount around them from the engine compartment side). This will give you a nice air tight seal.
Don't know if the below image will help or not but it shows all the parts. I've also got many good detailed pictures of the heater plenum and all the associated parts in my build thread below my sig. Pay careful attantion to the weather stripping on the plenum also as most of the time you'll need to replace it also.

Thanks for the ideas and I did them all. Went smooth as can be. Found the new thermostat I had put in previously was stuck! Nearly 50 years wrenching and never had it happen. Swapped out heater core (and lots of leaves to clean!) and got hoses done right. Lubed heater cables and cleaned and painted it all too. Not hard at all I didnt think. All I know is I have heat and the thermostat is clearly working as the gauge now is showing engine heating up!

Remember driving more than a few with no heat, (core bypassed) which isn't bad.
The wiping the windshield with your shirt sleeve is the bad scary part!
