Timing issue?
i have a 70 with a 302 from a 79. I had it running but then could not get fuel pass the carb. I installed a rebuilt and she fired up fine. The second time it would run rough and backfire quitting after 20-30 seconds. Then it would just turn with no indication of trying to start. I checked the rotor and it's still turning so chain is intact but she acts as if the timing is off. Is it possible that I have one of the vacuum ports improperly capped causing the issue or am I off base.

Re: Timing issue?
I'm no expert but you posted your question some time ago and haven't gotten an answer yet so I'll give it a stab. It wouldn't hurt to check for vacuum leaks. If it ran fine for a while and you didn't change the timing between starts I don't think timing would be the problem. However checking the timing wouldn't hurt.
One way to check for vacuum leaks is to force about 2 or 3 lbs per square inch of air into a vacuum port in your intake manifold while putting a rag in the carburetor. Spray soapy water over the engine and bubbles will show if there is a leak.
Good luck
