Steering Column

Post by SemperFi »

Hello, I have a 1973 Ford F-100. I have a (self inflected) issue. I was replacing the Turn Signal Switch, when I thought there was another issue. So, I removed the column flange, and noticed the column shiftier started to rise. I didn't realize it had a spring, until I pulled out the column shiftier. It also, had a clip, where I have no clue where it came from, or how it was attached. Below is a the photo.

If anyone has an reference on how to fix this, it would be greatly appreciated. If not, I may have to hire someone to reassemble.

Thank you,

That clip is the neutral safety switch lever. I will look I think I still have pics of where it goes. Ok I added a pic it just clips onto the inner steering tube if you look you will see the holes. The pointed rod part sticks out of the outer tube to move the neutral safety switch hopefully this makes sense. I thought I had an up close pic.

Also have you looked under the hood because the shifter arm for the transmission has fallen out of its position on the inner shifter tube to. These are not the easiest columns to put back together because of the spring pressure and the configuration of the attaching nuts and bolts take your time and search posts from people who have done this. You may want to take the whole column out and put it together on a bench That way you can inspect, repack or replace the lower bearing I did do one recently in the truck like yours is now what a joy it was lining up everything while putting pressure on the spring and getting the bolts in place. Take your time and just remember it is doable. And you may want to do this yourself hiring someone that has never put one of these columns together will struggle just as much.
