'70 Drum Brake Adjustment

Post by calipilot227 »

I've got one or more of my drums dragging. Is there a way to adjust them?

They can be adjusted easily. Its a difficult process to explain. Referencing some diagrams and pictures of the assembly first might be helpful. The brakes were built to be self adjust but over time the self adjusting mechanism usually fails if not frequently replaced and maintained which almost no one does.

Hard to describe in words. There are a lot of videos on YouTube. Many makes and models but the concepts are universal. https://www.google.com/search?q=adjusti ... 8&oe=utf-8 Basically, there is an adjuster with a gear wheel that spreads the bottom of both shoes apart. It is accessible through a hole in the back of the brake backing plate. You rotate the adjuster wheel to expand or contract the adjuster. I find it easier to remove the drum, adjust it by hand to get it close enough to where it just kisses the inside of the drum. Then put the drum back on and tweak it through the hole.

Turns out the problem was with the brake booster. Output rod was adjusted too long and putting pressure on the master cylinder. All is well now.

Note to self: always start with the last part you changed
