Disc in Front and Drums in Back

Post by ricccola777 »

Okay...as a newbie I am getting ready to put a 71 front end on my 68 Ford F250. The new front end has disc brakes. What is the best Master Cylinder and Power Booster for me?

You couldnt really go wrong choosing the one for the disc setup in my opinion. If you look you will see a difference in the master cylinders in the disc and drum setups. Also you may want to consider there may be a difference in the valve setup. I cant remember the correct names but I think there might be a difference in a proportioning valve and a distribution valve.

If you don't have a booster already, might look into a dual diaphragm f350 booster. There are several threads here about it.

All Bumpside trucks came with a brake pressure differential valve. '67-'72 F100s didn't come with factory front discs. In the case of the '68-'72 F250 and F350 trucks with optional factory front discs, they had the same pressure differential valve that was used on the all-wheel drum brake trucks. The only difference being that the '68-'72 F250/F350 trucks with factory front discs came with a stand-alone metering (hold-off) valve plumbed inline into the front brake circuit. Bumpside trucks with factory front discs never had a proportioning function for the rear drums.

The multifunction disc/drum brake valves didn't come into being on the trucks until 1973. There were three brake functions contained within one valve body assembly on the Dentside trucks: Metering (hold-off) to the front discs, pressure differential sensing between the front and rear brake circuits and proportioning to the rear drums.

Proportioning is used when there are dissimilar brake types on the vehicle --such as having discs on the front and drums on the rear but, as mentioned, Bumpsides that did have factory front discs didn't have a proportioning feature for the rear drums. That didn't come about on the trucks until '73 ('73-'79 Dentsides).
