added saginaw p/s works but is catchy

Post by hillcountryflt »

On my 71 f100 - I moved from 3-on-tree to c4 auto, changed out steering column and added power steering using a saginaw unit from a similar year pickup. My p/s pump and brackets came from about an 85 f150. I had previously upgraded to power disc brakes using components from a mid 70s f150.
The p/s works, but it is "catchy" at the sides. When on the jack stands, I notice no catching when taking the wheel from coast-to-coast. The pitnam arm appears to be correct. I mention that as I remember struggling some with connecting the pitnam arm to the drag link.
I don't know that this steering behavior would stop it from passing inspection, but it and an issue I am having with the right headlight (lot dimmer) appear to be all that's left for me to get this truck inspected and then licensed for the road.

The dim light is most likely a bad ground , clean your connections or run a jumper wire.

Ran a ground direct to battery post but no change. However, I am going to try grounding the headlight ground terminal directly.
As to steering issue..seems it might have been related to missing spring between steering wheel and column bushing. Seems a lot better now.

Have you tried swapping headlights from right to left? You may just have a bad headlight

Yep on swapping. Going to have to bring out the ole multimeter and see how much juice I have getting to different parts of the wiring harness.

I did two things in the steering issue. Ordered a new steering gearbox and replaced tie rods and drag link with parts for a 75 model. Seems to have worked.

You could spend an hour or so and convert your headlights to a relay setup, and you'll be stunned by the difference....Best upgrade I've done in years.

Another vote for this, but don't be fooled into buying a LMC relay "set".
Fab your own wiring / terminals / relays / circuit breakers and walk away from your headlight issues for 30+ years.

I bought a relay set for my pertronics ignition on my 69 f100. Not sure if it improved anything and sure seemed pricey for what I got. I will just have to sit there, find out the components I need to buy and put one together.

I sent out the part #'s with my truck when I sold it last year or I could help.
Can def advise to shop ebay for the best deals and to also replace the headlight sockets with the ceramic type, (our trucks came with a plastic type from the factory that just don't hold up to the heat of halogen bulbs terminal ends well). The new socket I'd gotten also came with new terminal ends-be careful when installing these as they will crack easily!
Hope it helps.

New power steering gearbox in place. I have a very slight leak at the the upper line. Will the drag link and tie rods (think I just needed one tie rod and the drag link) and the new steering gear, things seem much better in the very limited testing done.
