Steering gear

Post by Busboy »

Has anyone done a power steering gear swap on a 68 f-100 from the bendix gear to the ford gear?

It works out best if you find a donor truck, Things you will need steering column for Saginaw box, pitman arm, and engine perch for Saginaw power steering box. Here's a link to study before you begin http://www.fordification.com/tech/powersteering.htm

Busboy,

How did you end up with your steering gear swap? I am planning the same from a 72 to a 67 2wd. I have the front clip off the truck now for the new motor going in and will swap the left side motor mount now, but the rest will happen later.

Did you have to / choose to, modify the steering column length?

SBR.

To be more clear: I have a 67 f-100 with factory power steering. It is a bendix steering gear box. I am wanting to know if anyone has changed their truck over to the later ford brand of gearbox.

If I'm correct the non power steering gear box is a direct interchange with the bendix power steering gear box. So if you want to go from the bendix gear box it will be the same whether you have power steering now or not. The ford power steering came out in late 1968 and is longer than the bendix so the ford steering column shaft is shorter. Using your original steering column shaft will bring the steering wheel closer to your chest while driving "DANGEROUS". Also the angle of the steering column changes so you will need to change the bracket that bolts to the fire wall. The Ford power steering bracket is marked Power Steering. The fire wall seal is also different for the ford steering. This is why it is best to find a donor truck with ford steering and use the column out of it. Also the ford steering uses a different engine perch "FE engines only" grab that off your donor to. Read through this link before you start http://www.fordification.com/tech/powersteering.htm be sure you take pictures and post them. As wayne would say have a good ford day.
