Front end swap drum to disks: Getting ready to take the plunge

Post by vwfreak »

Have been reading the wealth of info here on Fordification and think it's time to swap the drums off my 67 F250 to a complete disk front end I got off a '75 F250 at least a year ago. I'm tired of stepping over it in the garage, and the 47 year old bushings are driving me crazy!!! Besides, after a trip to the junk yard yesterday with a 2320lb payload (8 old motor blocks, 5 crankshafts, 7 camshafts, half a dozen heads, various water pumps and other metal bits AND a C6 for a 385 series) I was rather nervous the drums wouldn't do what I needed them to, but grateful I didn't have to find out!

Took the donor front end apart yesterday and sent it to get hot tanked. During disassembly I measured king pins and bushings to be 1.0535" on the left with a bushing ID of 1.0564" and on the right I got the pin at 1.0540" and bushing at 1.0560". So, .002-.003" slop between the pins and bushings. Is there a published factory spec for these? Seems too much to me as it is, and with it all apart I'll likely change them anyway. I'll be using HIO's shopping list from a recent post by another member and hitting up Rock Auto for most of the parts.

Appreciate the valuable info already posted, and a preemptive thank you for what will certainly be more than a few questions!

There's this:

I like the color scheme on your truck. That's what I want mine to look like, only with the cab roof white.

Read through that flyboy. Great info. I have a complete '75 front end, I-beams, spindles and all associated brake parts and radius arms from the same donor truck. I also picked up a really big sway bar off a '79. I needed to notch my donor radius arms for the sway bar brackets which I did yesterday. Thankfully rotors are quite new and have plenty of meat on them.... Contemplating powder coating all the components prior to install.... Not sure if I'll do that or blast them in our cabinet and spray em at home with Rustoleum....
