71 F-250 King Pin Time!

Post by Chico »

Hello all

It's now time to do all the front end work for my 71 F-250. This includes new King Pins and bushes and everything else like castor and pivot bushes too. Also need new rotors and pads for the disc brakes.
Here's the thing, I live in Australia and could use some help for this left hand drive bohemeth.
I really could use some help determing what parts to order. It seems summit is my only option. Anyone able to put together a "shopping list" of what to order and where?
Thanks.

Before disassembling the front end, find and verify that a machine shop is equipped and can ream the bushings to size. Know the cost and the turn-around time. Plan ahead.

Shopping list:
King pin kit with metal bushings
Radius arm bushings (go polyurethane!)
I-beam pivot bushings (go polyurethane!)
Wheel bearings, bearing races, and seals.
Rotor caps (optional but old, beat up caps look like crap!)
Rebuilt calipers
Brake rotors
Brake pads
Brake hardware kit
Brake hoses
Grease, tub
Grease, in a gun
Loc-tite thread locker
Anti-seize compound
Cotter pins
Torque wrench!

Other stuff to consider is the steering system. Add these if it's time:
Inner and outer tie rods
Adjusting sleeve

Hi, Chico!
HIO has a pretty good shopping list for you. I'm sure if you find a shop that works on heavy trucks they should be able to ream the bushings for your new king pins. It takes a piloted reamer and the know how to use it.
If no one there can do it, nylon bushings are an option, but they won't last as long as bronze.
Here's link to what I did on mine:

You may want to have a machine shop press out the old king pins, they can be in there awfully tight!

Try Rock Auto, http://www.rockauto.com

Not sure how punished you'll get with shipping, though.

All I can add is that my 67 f-100 had plastic kingpin bushings from the factory with 92,000 miles on it and they were in descent shape when I replaced them I went back with plastic bushings again which will outlast me. I've installed and reamed kingpin bushings in larger trucks for years but I just love the convenience of the plastic (delrin) ones. The key to a long life is as always lubing them once in a while with the wheels up in the air and turning the wheels left and right to distribute the grease properly. You can't grease kingpins or ball joints for that matter with the vehicle weight on them.
