Ford or Chevy?

Post by pockets1776 »

I purchased a new wiring kit for my 69 F100. Now I want to put a tilt column in the truck. The harness is aimed at Chebbies, so do I do a Chevy column or a Ford column? I'm told that an 85, or earlier, ford F150 column will fit the truck, but will a Chevy column make a better install? If so, which one am I looking for? :hmm:

Not sure but I'd think you'd be better off with the Ford column. Probably have more mods to do, with the Chevy, than just wiring. I bought the EZ Wiring kit and intend to just splice in my original dash connectors for lights, ignition, etc. Any column from '68-'79 is a relatively easy swap, if you get similar configurations to your existing column. With the '79 you can have tilt steering. http://www.fordification.com/tech/tilt.htm and for general purpose swaps http://www.fordification.com/tech/powersteering.htm

I haven't wired my column yet ('78 F-150 tilt) but, I'm also busy changing to front discs, Saginaw power steering gear box, and adding a Ford C-2 power steering pump and brackets to the 240 in my '69 F-100.

I just have the wires pulled back out of the way.

Fortunately, my column was in overall good shape. I rebuilt it with parts I got from NPD and Bronco Graveyard. Key components, like the tilt mechanism, are not readily available.

For the final price of what I paid for the column and components, I could have purchased one of the expensive versions of the Ididit tilt steering columns, which may possibly have more rebuild parts readily available for them.

However, I don't regret going with my column. It's Ford and doesn't look like the Ididit Chevrolet column.

Thank you, Gentlemen, for your insight. :) I, too, purchased the EZ kit. :D
