Steering Wheel Crack

Post by 69Ford »

This is the second steering wheel I have restored. Doesn't look pretty now but once painted very nice. I use JB weld in the crack and use a carpenters clamp to squeeze it back together as much as possible and let it set over night. I use 1000 grit wet sandpaper to touch up. Once painted and the horn ring on you would be hard pressed to find the crack. The first steering wheel I had a body man paint turned out wonderfull. Wondering what other people use for paint and how it holds up. And if there is a good rattle can paint I can use.

Nice work on the resto. I had to paint an ashtray for my Olds 98 a while back and they do make plastic paint. I took a piece of trim to an automotive paint supply store and explained what I wanted to do, they hooked me up with a rattle can that was a DOBA perfect match (DOBA - think Marissa Tomei - My Cousin Vinny). One year later, not even a hint it wants to come off. The paint has to have plastic in it I believe. When I moved, the moving company WOULD NOT take any aerosol cans so I had to give them all away. I cannot remember the brand name now.

seymour makes a lot of high end aerosols might be a good bet to check for a local distributor.

i use a product called 'bulldog adhesion promoter' on plastic, chrome, or anything else i'm afraid wont stick. makes a huge difference for adhesion. For something like a steering wheel that doesn't flex much, you'd probably be good with bulldog but for softer plastic stuff (bumper covers on new cars mostly) you gotta buy paint with plasticizer in it so it stays flexible after curing.

Thanks for the input and here's a pic of the first steering wheel I did. This one was worse.
