power steering cooler location

Post by MAK »

Mounted the power steering gear box and I have a question about mount location for the fluid cooler. The pic below shows the cooler as it was attached to the steering box when I got it. It's likely been bent at some point prior to getting to me. Can anyone tell me where exactly it is supposed to go or if it is even the stock setup? It doesn't look like the cooler photos I have seen of other installations on here. Different versions for different years? Does it mount somewhere to the inner fender?
Thanks

That is not a setup that I have seen before, but that does not mean it was not stock to something at some point. All of the PS cooling system that I have seen in our trucks is a single bend that goes up above the pump and then back down. Attached to the single bend are a bunch of small fins similar to a radiator setup. the air passes through and cools.

You can see the very top of the one I am talking about in the picture below. You can see the one bend with a few of the fins before the picture ends. It is probably about inches long and mounts to the top of the PS pump and goes up from there.

I dont have an answer for you on your setup unfortunately...

EDIT: Found a better picture which shows the whole stock setup...

Yeah, the one that goes above the pump with the fins seems to be the one I have always seen.
Just found this:

This is a factory set-up as well and was used on later model Ford trucks. The looped cooling tubes mounted to the inner fender.
