My parking brake broke!

Post by RAVENDRAKE1970F250 »

I went to step on my parking brake in my 1970 F250 and it will not hold down. I found a tiny spring on the floorboard with a broken end, but when I looked at the diagram of a parking brake I didn't see any springs in the drawing. Can anybody tell me how to fix the parking brake and if this spring I found is the problem? THX!

I believe there is a spring that operates the ratchet cam, or whatever it's called, that let's the pedal click down. Pulling on the release handle disengages that cam and the big spring on the equalizer assembly under the bed is what pops the pedal back up. Look at the top of the pedal and see if you can locate the cam. Probably even have the other piece of the spring hanging from it. Take the spring to the hardware store and find one similar. There's no secret to it, any spring the same size, or close, will work.
