So many questions

Post by Flightman91 »

I have two questions.

First, I would like to put the 4x4 in my truck. I have all the parts but the rear end has different gears than the front end. I have the rear end with the correct gears, but the brakes are all rusted and I am wondering if it would be easier to change the gears to the rear end in the truck, or to move my brakes to the other rear end and put that in the truck? They are both dana 60's out of bumps.

Second, hopefully I will shortly be in possession of a large camper, equipped with trailer brakes which I would like to use. I also have an old trailer brake controller, that seems to connect to the brake line in the truck but I can find no instruction online on how to set this up. Would anyone know how to install this?

As for the rear end, definitely easier to fix the brakes than to swap out 3rd members. Don't know about your trailer brake question though.

The old school electric brake controllers had to be mounted usually under the dash or to the steering column so the handle for manual control could be used while driving to control only the trailer brakes if needed. The single line to the unit was teed into the brake line close to the MC to provide pressure to the unit so the trailer brakes would be used in conjunction with the pulling units brakes. You will also need to acquire a large Spring type multiple resister unit to install inline so you can customize the amount of current supplied to the trailer brakes on application, this will depend on weight of the unit and on how many axles of brakes on the pulled unit are used for braking as some tandem and triple axle trailers only used the front axles or all axles for brakes, it is kind of shaped like a large Z with connection points located at each corner and mounted on a large dielectric board. Seems as if I remember someone some time back posted a picture of a resister unit & asking "What is this", maybe he will chime in or you might search up a picture of it. The needed brake line Tee & extra brake line can be obtained at FLAPS (Friendly Local Auto Parts Store) or online (Speedway Motors, as a suggestion), as to the Controller Resister, I would think a Farm & Ranch Store or a Trailer Supply Store may have or may know where to find one.

I would install it in a recylce bin.
You can buy a nice electric controler for under $100. that's better and easier to use. :2cents:
