'67 Merc Wheels

Post by IsertMotorCompany »

Hey guy's I just picked up this truck for a Resto-Mod project.

What are the chances that someone knows where those wheels came from? I have seen pictures of other bumpsides with those wheels but I'm not sure if they were a factory option or just a popular aftermarket wheel?

No names or anything on the backs so I'm hoping someone can steer me in the direction of where they might have come from.

They are definitely not factory wheels for a bumpside. Only plain steel wheels with hubcaps were factory installed.

The wheels on your truck appear to be the aluminum wheels that were first available on either 1978 or 1979 dentsides. Are there three small screw holes in the wheel between the lug nuts? If so, then it is the 78/79 wheel and the three holes (if they are there) are for attaching the black Ford centre cap. If there are no screw holes then the wheels are aftermarket.

Early broncos used those wheels. I was surfing CL last nite and saw two sets being offered...$350 per set.

I've always loved the old slotted mags. Had them on my '72 Satellite back in the day. Nobody makes them anymore, at least not exactly the same. I've seen some similar aftermarket chromed ones but not the.old brushed aluminum finish.

I answered in your welcome mat post. But based on what I can see in your picture, they look to be "5 slot mags" which were very popular aftermarket wheels in the late 60's and 70's. Still very much in demand today as no one makes them quite right anymore. So an original set is the way to go.

While slotted mags were definitely a popular aftermarket add-on, the wheels are this truck are factory Ford pieces from the dentside era. Most aftermarket slotted rims have rounded-off slots...notice how these are more square-ish looking? Definite giveaway. Ford started using these on F100 and F150 trucks in 1977. I love it when Keith pops in and schools us all with knowledge!

I did not know that and did not have a keen enough eye to spot what rims those were at the angle of your photo. Anyway, Keith is the man and knows his stuff.

Hey thanks FORDification. Those are definitely my wheels in the brochure; I found those black with red center caps in a box of parts that came with the truck! Thanks guys, I will keep you updated on the progress of the truck. If anyone is needing a set in Alberta let me know as I will likely go to a steel wheel.
