Heya all,
I'm new to the forums here since I'm new to the Ford ownership. I recently purchased a 1968 F250 and have rarely been able to drive it since I've spent most of my time under it or in the engine compartment. I do however have an issue that is a little perplexing and I was looking for some advice from the sages on FORDification. I was having some steering issues with this truck, so I replaced the rag joint, (which went a long way to taking the play out of the steering) and replaced the destroyed front shocks with some LT shocks. The issue that I'm still not able to work out is that during a right handed curve at speeds above 45, I get a significant pull to the right, and immediately have to correct back to the left. This doesn't happen in a slight curve, only when I get into a steeper curve. It feels as if the nose actually drops on the divers side, like the tire may be rolling. I haven't found any play in the wheels with the truck off the ground and I'm at a loss at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

With or without brake usage? Do you have an anti sway bar?

No brakes, running down the road through a right hand curve between 45-60 mph. I don't believe that the twin I beams had an anti-sway bar.

These truck are great for body roll. Are your front springs good? If so you might be comparing the old beast to a newer vehicle handling wise. An anti-sway bar will help the truck whether is resolves this issue or not.

Yeah, I guess my next step is to put an anti-sway bar in.

Re: Sudden pull to the right
So, for anyone that cares, I took the truck in to get it aligned to see if that would clear up the pull to the right. The mechanic took my keys and put the truck up on the rack. When he came back into the waiting area, he was kind of laughing. He took me into the bay under the lift and showed me all of the bushings that are supposed to be there but are either gone or completely worn down. Guess I'll be swapping out the front end for one with disk brakes.....

I was going to say, check the axle bushings....
These can be replace for very little, no reason to change out the brake system unless that's something you feel you need to do.

Re: Sudden pull to the right

This what my I-beam bushings looked like when removed!
At least I know what made the clunking sound!

Here's how I did my bushings:

Everything but the dust shields and anchor brackets (these are the brackets that actually bolt to the spindles, and the calipers bolt to the anchor brackets) is available off the shelf. If buying new, I would highly recommend getting parts for your year of truck. It makes it much easier to remember what you have, and there are differences in the late/post 72 calipers and those from 68-early 72. You will love the way your truck stops with discs!

I keep an eye out for F250 bumps with front discs, so I can grab those brackets and dust shields, but there aren't too many of them in the yards anymore.
Good luck!
