goofy c6 problem

my C6 shifts fine around town, but take it for a trip on the freeway for a bit.. come to city traffic.. it wont shift out of first. I have to manually shift it until I shut it off and it cools down. what gives?

BTW.. changed fluid and filter.. made no difference. Leaky modulator was replaced one year ago.. could be defective or worn out prematurely?

try the modulator. thats probably the problem. or a vacum problem going to the mod. clogged line?

I tried the trans forum, used the search, 20million pages later I couldn't find my exact problem.

one of the experts on the Ford Trans forum can probably shed some light on your tranny's problem. They were helpful for me. jz

I'd just call Broader and see what he suggest.

There are a number of things that come to mind, sticking valve in the valve body or bad/sticking governor are two that come immediately to mind.

Have you checked the fluid level after running freeway? Could be burning the fluid. Could be getting Air inside of trans. Or your return line from the cooler is leaking.

Have you pulled the vac line from the modualator? if fluid comes out you know what to do.

Ck. the piston the modulator has behind it. They
get stuck sometimes.

If the little valve under the modulator is working smoothly, time to get
into more serious stuff. Pull the driveline out so you can pull the trans
"tailshaft" off. On the output shaft, up against the back of the tranny is
the "govenor". It's the aluminum part on the flange. It's got 2 valves
to ck. and free up if their sticky. After you go this far, you might as well
put a new seal in the back. If it still hangs up now, the last thing is pretty
messy, but if you got this far you can do it. Pull the pan and the valve
body. Get a shift kit. There not too expensive, and they tell you which
valves are which. Your looking to find the 1-to-2 shift valve. Take it out
and clean it good in solvent. Blow it off with air, if you have air. Same
for the valve body. Do all those little valves, one at a time. Make sure
their clean and free to move in their bores. Double ck it's all put back
as it came apart. Put it back together with a new filter and it will probably
surprise you.

Get a "paper&rubber" kit, as they call it and a rear seal & filter.
You'll need a case of ATF also. (Tranny shops for the parts-$)
