Can you swap tailshafts?

Post by dwj9124 »

Hey Guys, not too long ago I had a C4 tranny rebuilt from a 72 F100, short tailshaft, bolt on yoke. I recently aquired a 77 F150 that 2nd gear is slipping, also a C4. I tried the usual things with no help so I want to put the rebuilt C4 in it providing I can swap over tailshafts and housing. The tranny in the 77 has a long tailshaft with a slip yoke. Can anyone tell me if I can easily swap the tailshaft and housing over? I sure appreciate any help in this matter, thanks guys.

Tear it down and swap them. There should be no issues at all.

yes so basically you have to rebuild the transmission in order to do the tailhousing swap because the tailshaft comes out of the front of the trasnmission. but it can be swapped out for sure.

Wow, I guess that takes care of that project, I guess I will just have to have the tranny overhauled if it has to be taken that far down. Thanks so much for the information, at least now I know what direction to take.

it has to come completely apart except for the drums don't have to have the clutches taken out of them. but then you will still need the gaskets to put it back together with. so your not to far from just rebuilding it completely. i guess the c4 is hard to rebuild and make it work correctly. from personal experience and from what i have read.
