I went to replace my water pump today and one of the bolts snapped off and another is stripped. Do the bolts that mount the water pump go all the way into the block? Or does the timing cover have its own bolts that go into the block? The front of this engine is covered in oil and dirt and I cannot tell just by looking. My motor is a 1970 302, dipstick in timing cover.
Thanks for your help,
Chris

Both, there are a few that continue into the block, but the timing also has some of it's own bolts.

yep what he said. it depends on which ones broke off as to what you have to do to fix it. basically if you can get soem vise grips on whats left of the bolts and put some heat to it. not too much on the timing cover. but you can turn the bolts right out usually. pb blaster will also help loosen the bolts up.

if you can get on it with a small pipe wrench....a pipe wrench gets tighter and tighter as it turns.
