bought this truck from a member awhile back. eng (I 6) is not original and plan on replacing it (V8 ). in the mean time i will use it (I 6) until the other is ready. the po wrote this in his ad " am going to say that one is NOT running because the last time I drove it it began producing LOTS of white smoke from the crankcase. The opening where you put the oil has smoke puffing out when you open it up. " . now he drove it on the trailer and off to get it to my house. what am i looking forward to when i get home to this truck? thanks
i was thinking it might be rings, valves or both?

Re: smoking eng
If the smoke is white that means coolant... blown head gasket or cracked block or head.
The puffing smoke out the valve cover sounds like a well worn engine, probably predominately rings, but valve sealing is probably a contributor.
Honestly, there are some things you can check, but the likely hood is that you are looking at an ovehaul.

Here is what the po said when i asked him about it:DuckRyder wrote:If the smoke is white that means coolant... blown head gasket or cracked block or head.

the truck had rust in the tank when I bought it. I replaced the fuel filter a few times and I was able to drive it without it clogging up.When pulling out the dipstick it looks really rusty. I should have cleaned it off and changed the oil before it started smoking really bad. It probably wasn't a very good engine to begin with. They said the engine came from a '79 econoline van. It was always easy to start with the manual choke. It was a lot of fun to drive even with the vibration.I'll try to think of more good or bad about the engine. It never leaked coolant while I had it. I don't recall having to add any water/coolant.

Re: smoking eng
did some research on 1979 econolines. the only inlines that were available for them were 300's. if so, would there be some sort of off balance there that may be causing the vibration? and with the rust look on the dip stick, the chance of coolant in the eng, thats the reason for the smoke? maybe?
