Do I Have To Move My Carrier Bearing

Post by FordTruck »

Well i dropped my driveshaft off at the shop friday and I wasn't thinking and they cut about 3"off the front shaft so i could save money without having it balanced because one place wanted $55 to cut it and $45 to balance  and this place he would cut it off the front shaft for $35 bucks. So anyways will I have to move my carrier bearing, and if so how do i go about doing it so it wouldn't tear stuff up? Or is it possible to slide the back shaft a litte so i can make up the difference??

Don't do it! :nono: I'm sorry you got the wrong shaft cut down, but you're opening up a Pandora's box by thinking about messing around with the carrier bearing location. Just throw it on the scrap iron pile, get yourself another front driveshaft to replace it and shorten the rear shaft.

What was the reason for cutting the shaft? Did you get a different rear end or change transmissions? If you changed rears you cut the rear shaft, if you changed the trans you cut the front shaft. If you did both you have to measure and start from scratch. Hawkrod

I changed transmissions from a FMX to a C6 and my driveshaft was like 3" shorter and i tryed to save money by having the front shaft shortened and i'm thinking now i'm gonna end up having to move my carrier bearing forward.

If you were cutting it down because the tranny is longer, you cut the front shaft at the front. Carrier bearing position should be unchanged as well as the rear shaft.

No the C6 was roughtly 3" shorther than the FMX. I think the driveshaft I had was in the neighborhood of btween 70" and 71" and if i rember correctly i needed it to be 68 3/4".

Did you put in a c6 or the fmx? I just can't follow how the trans is 3" shorter and you are having to cut down your driveshaft.... :?

Makes no sense. If you went with a shorter transmission, then you needed to lengthen your drive shaft, not shorten it.

Go to a wrecking yard and get a drive shaft from a 3/4 ton truck that had a C6 in it. I'd say a 68-72 F250 with an FE engine would be your best bet.

Shoot now i'm confused :hmm:
Yes i put the C6 in place of the FMX,but all i know is that the drive shaft yokes and mount where all different, So i took the drive shaft from the truck the tranny came with and it fits perfect, but its my brothers and he's gonna start driving that truck so I just took my drive shaft to the shop along with his and told them to match it. Tey cut the front shaft so now i'm worried about the carrier bearing being in a different place.

Then you should be OK. I was under the impression you changed rearends and needed the rear shaft shortened.

The C6 is longer than the FMX, so the front shaft will be too long. You were correct in getting it shortened up to match....as long as it was shortened the correct amount, you should be able to bolt it in and go. If it got shortened too much, then you have to pitch in and get a replacement, not move the carrier bearing. Besides, if you were to move the carrier bearing forward to match up with a shorter front driveshaft, now your rear driveshaft will be too short, right?

Keith i swear you think of everything i never would have thought about moving it and my other shaft being different

I called the drive shaft shop today and its done, but it turned out to cost more than it was suppose to. I had them cut it put 2 u joints and put the C6 yoke on for me and I called them and it turned out to be $111.71 . Seems they went ahead and put all new u-joints in for me so all i have to say is IT BETTER FIT!!
I'll probably get it wed because no school friday so that means long weekend  So come HE!! OR HIGH WATER i'm gonna know if that transmission is gonna be useable, brakes or not that truck will move under its own power!

Thanks for all the responces but I spent $111.01 on a pice of pipe  The carrier bearing was about 2" back from where it was suppose to be witch is about how much I had cut. So the hunt starts for a single drive shaft NO more two pice :x
