No heartbeat in this bump yet[It's Alive] Picture

Post by taylor351 »

Okay, got my '69 home about a month ago between trying to convert it's new home into a workshop and farming I have gotten to work on it a little.

Here's my problem; when it got home it would not turn over. Replace the solenoid and she turned over, but will not start.

No fuel to carb. Blew out all old fuel in tank, blew out all lines, replaced filter, put in fresh fuel, have fuel to carb, still will not start.

No spark. Replaced, points, plugs, condenser, coil, still no spark.

I need ideas or instructions or.......help

I do not feel that I am getting juice to my coil. Also how do I tell if my solenoid is working right. The two little plugs on the side?

Thanks in advance.

Keith

Take a test light to the (+) side of the coil and turn the key to Run it should light up. Also, try starting it with the test light on the (+) terminal, the test light should flash. If you don't have any power to the (+) terminal then there is a problem with the ignition wire... If you get it to come on but it doesn't flash when you try to start it then there is a problem with the distributor.

If you do not have power there you can run a jumper wire from the (+) on the battery to the (+) on the coil and it should start and run. But use caution as you don't want to leave this wire hooked up long with out the motor running, and to turn the motor off you will have to disconnect it. Use this only for trouble shooting purposes.

The small terminals on the solenoid: 1 is for the start signal from the ignition switch (which must be working if you can turn the motor over), 2 the other is for the boost voltage to the coil for start. When you are cranking the motor over this sends a full 12V to the coil to help start the engine (it should start with out this hooked up).

Let us know what you find out after this and we'll go from there.

I get power occasionally. Tonight I tested it I had power until I hit the switch then power went away. Do I need a new switch?

I just got back to the truck today I will try the jumper wire. I can usually figure out mechanical but let the electrical to other people.

Friends are telling me to take my truck down to my neighbor a couple of miles away. The "Ford Guru". I almost called him for advise but I am tackling this on my own.... I hope.

Thanks for the help.

Try unhooking the small brown wire from the starter solenoid and see if it still looses power. I have seen new solenoids be bad...
Otherwise, your ignition switch could be bad.

Best way to learn is trying. hopefully we can help you get it figured out.

Thanks for the help Thunderfoot, I got it running for a second or two. Now I need to work on the carburetor. The throttle will not move when I press on the pedal.
Oh well after sitting for 8 years you kind of expect these things right?

It is alive. It started and ran a good minute, even drove it around the yard, thanks to the help here at fordification and especially Thunderfoot.

Now to tear it down and rebuild it  . We have the technology.
Oh and here is a picture of the ole girl.

Again thanks to all here.
