How do you get the axle out 1969?

I just got a 1969 Ford f-250 for $600. I need to replace the rear brake shoes, and in order to do that I have to remove the axle. It's a Dana 60. How do remove the axle? My three jaw puller will not pull it off. What do I need to do? In my manual it says "If tapered dowels are installed in the axle shaft flange, place a drift in the center of the flange and strike it sharply to loosen the dowels." What dowels are they talking about?

what they are talking about are cone shaped washers that are inside the channels for the bolts that hold the axle tothe hub. You can try and hit it with a hammer around the axle head. to loosen them, or you can tr and pry it loose and wiggle it out with a big flathead screwdriver. lube it up with wd or pb blaster. if you can get a small screw river or centerpunch on the split in one of the coes you might be able to spin it out or at least enough to loosen it.

Try placing a pipe or socket that is bigger on the ID over the cone washers onto the face of the axle flange and smack it with a hammer.

I wacked the studs. Now I got the axle out. I just need to get a socket big enough to fit on the wheel bearing lock nut. Thank you for the help so far.

When you put it back together put some anti-sieze on them incase you have to take it back apart
