He said it had new brakes.....

Post by James72 »

Well I just brought home my '72 crew 4x4 last week and just now had a chance to look it over. The seller said it had "all new brakes" but the rear brake line had rusted through so they didn't work. The drums were still shiny so I believed him (stupid) I replaced the line and still barely any brakes, removed the front drums to see what appears to be original shoes with what feels like play dough for braking surfaces. Brakes always seem to be neglected until they don't work at all, My tip is: whether it's 5 or 35 years old take the wheels off and check 'em yourself, it's better then smashing your new baby cause someone (who was trying to unload it fast) said they were new, also YOU will be legally responsible if you hurt someone!
sorry for the loooong post, but it had to be said

i know that one, the guy who sold me my 90 said it had a complete brake job on it about a month prior, as i was taking it home, i noticed that it had a warped rotor ( i did take it on a test drive but you can only feel it on highway speed) so i took it all apart and i had about 30% left all around...

"All new brakes" usually means "slapped on some new shoes, left all the other stuff untouched".

I have to give the PO of my 72 credit on this one.He said I should check the brakes. It's something I would do anyway but in this case he was right. They were barely legal for PA safety inspection.

I bought my very first bump three months ago and when I drove it with him he said the brakes just needed bleeding and that if any mechanic told me i needed a brake job to tell them they are full of it. He said he just had it inspected.

Well of course the brakes had zero pad left on the passengers side and a large groove worn into the drum. The drivers side was a little better. I still wonder to this day why he would do that.

He did and it is, I checked before I bought it (for resale only) I'm installing a 7.3 turbo diesel so I didn't really care too much anyway. I even told the guy "I don't care whats wrong with it cause it's all coming apart anyway, but just tell me what you know is wrong". Oh well, live and learn.

Oh yeah,I,ve heard that one before. There was a 71 CS i looked at once and he said it was a 390 but when i looked at the disc brakes on the front I realized they were drums. They were the wider ones but still...

Anyway, that made me look at the VIN and as the 4th digit is your engine code, It was actually a Y which is 360.

I pionted this out and he was still positive it was a 390.
The truck was a piece of crap anyway so I left.
Side oiler FE, see if you can catch me!!!

Nah, you're not confused, just not seeing the bigger picture.

Hilary wants power. Power takes money. Money is the root of all evil.

That better?
