Horn Ring Clip Help Needed!

Post by Kiamors »

The plastic clip that holds the horn ring in place broke again, Not a big deal, I've fixed this before. However, when I went to screw the clip back into place I found that 2 of the screws have finally stripped out. I tried looking for slightly bigger screws or replacements with no luck. No parts place even lists the screws, let alone carries them, and I checked all the hardware stores in my area with no luck. I gave up and decided to try to get the screws to stay in place with a bunch of locktite threadlocker. This holds them in place, but I can't get the screws to stay in tight enough for the horn ring to work properly when installed. It comes out uneven and loose when installed. Has anyone else had this problem and found a way to fix it or have any ideas on how to fix it? Or maybe where to get some replacement screws? I'll try any thing.

JB weld is my last resort. I don't want to JB weld it in there and then not be able to get it out when the plastic clip breaks again or I want to disassemble my steering wheel so I can clean/restore it once I get the truck ready for paint. I was thinking of trying to use one of those rethreading kits and get some bigger screws and then grinding down the edges they would fit, but I am still looking for a better idea. because I don't know how well that would work seeing as how the holes for the screws, much like the screws themselves is tapered.

you can put the jb weld in the holes and let it dry and then redrill the holes to fit the original screws.

yea i do have one the part number is D7TA-8146-AA it is 20 inches top to bottom not including the fan area hump. and it is 28 inches wide actual measurement is 28 1/4 wide. this matches the lmc parts book as being for a 351 or 400 with or without a/c. i held it up to the two extra rads i have in the garge and it fit both of them perfectly. there is nothiing wrong with this shroud. i pulled it to sell it.

I have a '68 bumpside with a 360 in it. I don't know if that one will fit or not. I don't have the truck where I am. (I'm at school and don't feel like paying the 100 dollars or so in gas it would be to drive it up here and back every time I wanted to go home.) But I think if I remember correctly I would need a different one. besides, I haven't scavenged no where near all the junkyards in this area yet and I'm sure the shipping would be killer. Thanks for the offer though, I love how helpful everyone is.

yeah it probably wouldn't fit a fe radiator. shipping probably wouldn't be bad though. but if its the wrong one its the wrong one.
