Homemade tach housing

Post by Ranchero50 »

Whittled this out over the last two nights at work. Cup started as 3" EMT and the cap was flat 16ga steel that was hand beaten on a pile of rags. I welded the cap to the cup and chucked it up on the lathe and sanded it smooth. The riser is a piece of 1.5" stainless pipe that I squeezed to an oval with the vise and a piece of 1" square stock, the programmed the mill to cut the radius' for the cup and column. The column flange is 2" EMT that was turned on the lathe and then cut on a bandsaw. Plan on either sandwiching it between the column and the dash mount of siliconing it to the column if it fits right. Took about three hours to make and about four more to figure out how to do it. I'll probally spray it with clear or powdercoat it clear if I remember to get some powder at the carlisle All Fords show next weekend.

Some more pics of the install. The column tube fit great and overall it went in very easily (much better than a hose clamp...) I'd recommend the cut up 2" EMT on the column as a tach base to anyone.

I chose to just spray it with some satin clear for now. It's nice to know that I'm shifting around 2k normally and it idles great at 600 rpm.

Don't really have the need for a tach ,but with a housing that sweet I could just wing it. Great job.

Kinda what I was thinking. I bet you could make some good money if you had a assembly line set up.

Thanks for the comps, I don't know what other tachs would fit this housing. This one came out of a '84 bluebird bus via eBay for $2.25. It's 0-4000 rpm and works perfectly with the 360. Runs at 2200 RPM in fourth at 50mph with 4.10's.

My F350 does too! :P
But you do have to turn the tumbler to get it to run.

Awesome looking housing! I'm digging the brushed stainless look.
