Brake adjuster

Post by wildcard »

On my 71 with manual brakes, I've been having a problem with the left front brake tighting up on its own. I replaced the hose and the master cylinder recently and bled the lines.
I was wondering, if the adjuster was in backwards ( the star on the wrong side for instance ) would that cause them to gradually tighten over time? Like they say to adjust them by backing up and applying the brakes. All other parts look ok so I'm grabbing at straws now.

I have to release it by cracking the connections at the master cylinder. About every 2 days. It's not getting real hot, but enough that I can keep my hand on the rim for only a few seconds.
Any suggestions appreciated. Brake fluid is gettig expensive.

I'd pull the drum and have a look. I'm no brake expert, but it seems like somebody put something together wrong.

Thanks FLATBEDFORD, that's kind of what I was thinking too. Maybe Sunday. It's supposed to rain here tomorrow. Wife won't give up the garage.

Take both left side drums off and check that the starwheels look the same?

The self-adjusters still only work while going backwards. If you got the star wheels on the wrong sides, the self-adjusters would loosen the brakes.

If you have to crack open the brake lines, there's residual pressure building up for some reason. What all did you do to the brakes before this starting happening?

When it first started, I just happened to notice it was pulling left one day. I kept having to crack the lines so I replaced the MC. Still the same problem so I took the drum off, everything looked fine. Our shop mech. told me to check the hoses, maybe one was stopped up. Sure enough it was. replaced it and I still have the same prob.
