The conclution here is that it is better than a badly cracked and faded dash, but not anything near that the original. You can clearly tell that it is a cover and it does not fit all that well.
Since you have to look at it every time you drive the truck I would get a new one or a good used one.
I would even recover a cracked one before using the cover.

many thanks, I had a excellent one I hauled from Ohio & son-in-law tossed it as trash ..Oh well, water over the dam I guess..
I was going to go the no dash pad route, then the guy who is going to do the body work and me were talking and he mentioned, how would I see when the sun reflects off the shiney bright red paint?

Its really not that bad. I've had mine off for about a month and its hasn't been a problem for me, and mine is shinny red as well.

that shine can get bad at the right time of day turning the right corner. but it wouldn't be like that every minnute of the day. have you checked into just having your old one recovered?
My old harley has a chrome dash and glass spedo that will be a real pain when the sun is just right over my shoulder..but that all were like that stock. ya can always paint flt black like the hood of a 70 Mach 1 I think most all truck dashes were just painted before 67. Easier if ya got in a wreck, ya could just hose em off At lest we don't have stalactites like my old girlfriends Chevy had on the dash
Keep the pad, final answer. I like them better with the dashpad installed. I wouldn't make any permanent modifications to the dash unless you were more than sure that you wouldn't regret it. Good luck.
