brake lines w/ disc swap

Post by dotcentral »

How are people handling this? Seems like 2 ways to go.

Either mount the disc brake prop valve down where the drum brake splitter block (I forget the correct term) is mounted, so as to reuse the drum lines. Or the other way is to grab the donor vehicle lines (or buy new lines) and mount the prop valve in the factory spot by the p/s box.

I didn't think to grab the hard brake lines to the rear, so I'm leaning towards mounting the disc prop valve down where the drum block was & reusing lines.

I mounted mine a little farther back on the frame rail from where the drum prop valve was mounted. I did this because i couldnt fit the disc prop valve in the same spot as the drum because of the difference in size, and i had a fuel line running right in the way! Mine is mounted behind the trans crossmember in the big open spot in the frame rail. I did this also so I could have easy access to check for leaks.

hope this helps you..... now if I could work out my other problems I would be set.

Actually, the easiest way would be to simply replace all the lines. I was able to completely replace all brake lines and fittings for about $25 in hardware and a couple afternoons worth of putzing around getting them bent just perfectly.

My prop valve is the type which is mounted up on top of the steering box.

Keith, But didn't you have to double flare the ends of the lines? Doesn't that require a special tool? I've been told double flaring is a pain in the butt do to correctly.

Yes, the lines do have to be double-flared, which does require a special tool, but I just borrowed the setup from a friend. However, it's very easy to do...if you can single-flare, you can double-flare, with the right tools. I put together a little mini-tutorial on how to do it.

Right....'73-'77 were mounted above the steering box, under the master cylinder. The '78-'79 versions were a little smaller and mounted on the back of the engine crossmember.
