pwr steering hose

Post by Billybobjunky »

ok guys, i'm not gonna explain the whole situation but just know that I need to know alternatives for the pressure hose on the pwr steering system. does it have to be the fatty like the one that was stock? or can i bend a piece of steel tubing, flare it, and use that? thanks guys. also, i suppose having too much fluid in the pump causes too much pressure? i hate pwr steering fluid...

it should be flexible. and i dont think there is much room for too much fluid but there is some room to overfill it. drain a little out and see if it works better.

so the diameter of the hose doesn't affect performance? but it needs to be flexible? so if I used say metal brake line and curved it smooth, it would or wouldn't work? Also, if i just buy a replacement pressure hose, it's a '77 pwr steering set-up that came off of a truck with a 302. Should I buy the pressure hose for the '77 302 or the '77 400(my motor) bc they are two different p/ns.Thanx!

Just take your old hose in with you when you go to the parts store and compare it to the two hoses and get the one that matches it.

heh, this is one instance where that didn't work. I got it settled. I took the old one in (the "stock" 302 hose) and asked for the 400 hose and the 302 hose. they didn't have the 400 in stock but the 302 they had didn't even come close to matching mine. it was shorter by about a foot. But i bought it anyway and it actually matches up wonderfully! Go figure. If you got a 351m/400 and pwr steering use the 302 hose off of a '77 f100, works great!

You CANNOT have a hard line going from the pump to the steering box (unless you have solid engine mounts). When the engine is running, it's vibrating, and if you try to attach a hard line between something vibrating and something that isn't.....well, that line is gonna give out quickly. You need something that'll take the flex and vibration. You absolutely have to have flexible lines to all engine connections, including the PS hoses, fuel line, radiator hoses and heater hoses.
