bonus from my parts truck
after many (many) months of messing around, I finally got the 390 engine pulled from my '65 parts truck.
well I know it had a holley carb on it, but when I pulled the air cleaner off, it turned out to be a 4BBL carb, and after I looked it over, the intake is an 'S' code manifold!
so I'm a happy camper now. and I want to send a special thanks to DarrelM and his friend for donating this truck to my project!
on a side note, I found a '80 F-250 4x4 that just needs one of the engines I have laying around here for CHEEP! supposed nice body and interior, complete minus engine. and I already have an '80 for parts here! can't beat that with a stick! I'll see it tomorrow and get pics if I get it.

In life many men take the path of righteousness, some take the path many others follow (G.M. owners, for example), some take a more arduous path, some a simpler path. I, sir, took the PSYCO-PATH!!

re: bonus from my parts truck
Lots of folklore on the 4V "S" intakes. There are several versions of it, early S, later S, big S, little S...
Personally I think the early big S is the better one.
Guess we'll find out with the network54 intake tests.

The S Intake
Hi Fellas,
The S intake is associated with the S Code engine in 67-69 Mustangs and Cougars and other Fords / Mercurys (earlier for these). Next to the 428, it is a big deal in the Mustang / Cougar crowd because it is a big block. The S Code engine was a 390 cid 4V rated at about 320HP. The S Code engine is also referred to as a 390GT. A Holley was used for carburetion until 1969 when an Autolite carb was used.

4V S intakes were used on more than just the S code engines, also used on the 410 and 428. I don't think the S on the intake means the same as the S for the engine code or that the two go together. There were many S code engines with T intakes.

S Intake Manifold
Hi Barry,
Agree that S intakes may have been used in other applications. Never said that the intake was only used in a certain application.
Was only trying to point out the general association that many folks make, whether right or wrong, concerning the S intake.

Hi Jim, I wasn't trying to be argumentative. Sometimes it's hard to write the tone of voice.
More info, there were also 2V S and T intakes.
Have heard that the first S intakes were designed for the Tbird but then used across the board. I don't put much faith in that, just spreading the word.

doesn't it have something to do with the runners? When it comes to an intake. On the engine does this signify HIPO?

Yes, the runners on the T intake are like the old '58-'65 design except they neck down to match the smaller head ports that were standard on most '66 and later heads. The runners on the S are more uniform, does not signify HIPO. Here's a pic of a mid '70's T (with EGR) and a mid '60's S for comparison. They both have the same size ports at the head flange.
