CAN'T FIND PART!

Post by ladz »

Can any one tell me if and after market proportioning valve will work in place of the original part ? The one i am looking at should be placed between the rear breaks and the distribution block ! And if so , at what pressure do i set it at ?

I don't understand what you're asking. There shouldn't be anything between the distribution block and the rear brakes. If there is, then it's something that was added by a previous owner.

You can add an adjustable proportioning valve, to get the best front-to-rear brake balance, but I really don't think it's necessary for a stock truck. However, if you start altering size/width of brake components or use components from different vehicles, then adding an adjustable unit is a good idea....especially if you've got discs.

As for adjusting it, you just keep tweaking it until the front brakes lock up just before the rear.

Oh, you're looking at the ones with the little round knob. If I'm not mistaken, which I may be, these are for use on vehicles without any proportioning valve. If you have one, it would go between it and the rear brakes. Basically all it does is allow you to reduce the line pressure so the rear brakes engage later than the front. I enquired about replacement valves some time ago and most places don't carry a stock style one. Reason being: they don't usually wear out. They may become gunked up, but can usually be cleaned up. A good flushing and/or a "friendly" degreaser may free it.

I know nothing should be there but i can't find a proportioning valve , unless some can get one for me and ship it . An adjusting valve is what i am using, They are used on race cars and hot rods and they come with a pressure gauge so the breaks can be adjusted . Does it matter where it is installed , befour or after the distribution block ? If all the block does is distribute fluid wye not befour the distribution block?

An adjustable proportioning valve is used to limit pressure to the rear brake circuit. It's best to mount it directly under the master cylinder, on the line coming out of it that goes to the rear brakes.
