68 390 Throttle Return Spring?
Trying to straighten out the jury rigs from the po on my 68 F250 C/S. Does anyone have a picture of the factory set-up for the return spring on the 360/390 with automatic trans? The way the dashpot sits, the spring would have to have a pretty long section of no coils to keep from getting hung up, and still be long enough to reach the bracket at the ignition coil. The TSB #1489 addressed the problem, but didn't provide an illustration. Mine also has the ball stud on the throttle arm, and it is swaged into the arm, so I won't remove it as the TSB instructs. Thanks.

I have just been through this exact same scenario. From the pics I have been able to find, the short return spring does in fact bend around the dashpot bracket and into a hole. Mine seems to work perfectly.

Well, without a picture, I can't know what yours is like, but I'm sure that no part of a spring coil should contact the dashpot. That would be a potential hang-up point, and possibly impede throttle movement back to idle. I can come up with another jury rig myself, just wanted to see the factory Ford solution. I'll try to post some pics of the current set-up.

I'm not sure, but this schematic may be helpful.

Thanks. I have seen that diagram. Problem is, it isn't really showing how the direct line from the side of the throttle lever anchor point to the coil bracket spring anchor runs right up against the side of the dashpot. Ford calls for a C8tZ 9737 H spring, and gives the dimensions as: .75" OD, 5.44" long, 17 coils. But as I said, it probably has a considerable length with no coils to get around the dashpot.
