headers for '70 F250 Camper Special w/390?????

Post by 56RanchWagon »

Anyone know of headers (shorty, mid-length ot long-tube) that will fit a '70 F20 Camper Special with 390, automatic, power steering and disc brakes, no air conditioning. The new short block (.030 over, Scat crank and rods, Mahle pistons, etc. -- previous owner spent a bunch on parts) is done, we're ready to assemble the rest (lightly ported OEM heads, Edelbrock "Street Master 390" intake and 600cfm Holley, still need a distributor). The entire original exhaust, including manifolds, is missing. I hate to have a decent engine be strangled by repop log-type exhaust manifolds (Dorman, from Summit Racing). Has anybody done headers and/or a custom exhaust on a Camper Special? Sanderson makes four different shorty headers for FE applications but they had no clue about fit on a '68-72 C.S. Any help, guidance, photos would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

i have headers and dual exhaust on my 69 camper special. I don't know who made them, don't see any reason why they would be specific to camper special.

Here's a set of Sanderson FF427-P in my '70 F100. There's not a lot of difference between the trucks in the engine bay, in my case the master cylinder and booster along with the power steering gear came from a '71 CS so these should give you some idea about fit. Image

To Bill Ramsey and Canonman67,

Thank you both very much for the help. Canonman, extra thanks for the superb photos; they make it crystal clear. I'm going to get a set of the Sanderson FF-427s and probably run a pipe from the drivee side collector over to the right side, make a "Y" connector with the pipe from the right connector, run a single 2 1/2 or 3-inch pipe and muffler down the right side and dump it our ahead of the rear wheel.

Thanks again and if either of you get around the Whittier area (Los Angeles County, about 15-miles east of downtown L.A.), the first round of tall cold ones (or some good Single Malt Scotch) is on me.

I have the Sanderson headers on my 68 CS 390 with dual exh running down both sides. No problems with Aux gas tank clearance.
I did have to swap out my steering box due to clearance on the hump of the box..

Thanks, carnuk and Mancar1, for your help and advice. Help from people who've already been there and done that makes a huge difference when you're trying to assemble a jigsaw puzzle that was taken apart by someone else, who lost some of the pieces.

Also, thanks again to Bill Ramsey and Canonman 67. This site is great and so are the members.

I too am running Sanderson FF427 mid-length headers....

Here is my modded trans crossmember that allows the driver side tube to go past the trans.. As a CS, ya prolly got saddle tanks but an idea if you wanna avoid a cross-over tube.

I have Doug Thorley Long tube headers on my 1972 Camper Special w/ a 390 and I couldn't be more happy with them mostly because they got rid of the old factory exhaust manifolds. Those paired with an X-pipe running into dual flowmaster 44s the truck sounds mean at idle and driving but I can still have a conversation in the cab without having to yell/talk loudly.

I too have the Thorley's on my 69 Camper Special and a 390.
If anything the clearance to the PS steering box, bendix, is real close, but doable.
I don't like how the muffler shop did the cross-over which is pretty much directly under the trans pan. One day I'll probably redo it. Had the headers put on before I rebuilt the motor/trans and I wasn't as picky as I am now. I am running dual all the way back.
I love the headers. Bought copper exhaust gaskets and stage-8 header bolts so I don't have to worry about exhaust leaks and after a couple thousand miles on the motor so far so good.

I'm in Whittier for work (by PIH Hospital), but by LAX at home. I'll try and push pics up, can't access Photobucket from work.....

Hey HDxLoki and Habu:

Any chance you can put some photos of your long tube headers? I have a 71 F250 CS 360 and picked up a set of long tubes for $40. Not sure of the brand but I can't complain since I have a cracked orig exhaust manifold. I'm hoping they fit but I have seen some posts about issues with the aux tank and long tubes headers possibly fitting only 4X4s.

Mancar, any chance you can put up some pics of your exhaust under the vehicle? I want to make sure the pic in my head is what you have going as I am going to need to do this in the spring.

Manca1,

What did you swap in for a steering box to give you clearance?
