The frame rails on a '78 are wider than your truck do the tank won't fit between the rails. Unless it's a 4we. Those frame rails are the same width. http://www.fordification.com/tech/fueltank01.htm

Simplest way to check is to measure the frame rails and see if it'll fit. Also replacing the rubber fill hose eliminate 99% of fuel smell in cab complaints.

No, dentside trucks without the wider frame-rail spacing have the fuel tank in the cab still.

The hot ticket now seems to be using a mid-to-late-'60s Mustang tank. Some fabrication will be necessary (build a frame to hold the tank and then fab up the filler neck), but if the only reason you want to switch is out is the smell, you simply need to replace the rubber fill neck and the filler neck grommet. Over time they become dry, brittle and cracked and will allow those fumes into the cab. That would be a lot easier by far.

I was recently under a late 90s Jeep Cherokee sport (XJ) , I didn't measure close but the gas tank looked adaptable.
And the fuel filler wouldn't come up in the middle of the bed floor.
