Rubber Gasket for Oil Drain Plug?

Post by colnago »

All,

I'm doing a rebuild, and installed the oil pan this weekend. I needed a new gasket for the plug, so I ran down to the local AutoZone. I expected them to pull out a copper gasket, but they had a pack of rubber gaskets. The back of the pack suggested changing them every oil change. I've never seen a rubber gasket, I'm used to the copper ones (even on my newer cars).

Is this legit? Should I junk it, and get a copper washer elsewhere? I'm not firing the engine up any time soon, so I have a bit of time to figure this one out.

I've seen variety packs for both copper and plastic/fiber washers over in the Help/misc section at the parts store. All, including rubber, will work. With the rubber just be sure and don't overtorque or it will squeeze out from the bolt head.

Go with either copper or nylon. Throw the rubber ones away.
