Tuning help

Post by 67 ford f100s rule »

I am at the end of my rope. I swapped a 351w in place of the original 302. It's out of a 1978 f150. It has a 600 edelbrock cars and 4 barrel intake. I also installed an HEI distributor. The truck will run but it back fires off idle and feels gutless. I remember my high school shop teacher teaching it, but I can't remember much from that class. Hopefully some of you guys that have been doing this for a while can help me out.

Have you verified the firing order, 302 and 351 are not the same (with some exceptions).

Yeah firing order is correct. The engine acts like it wants to even out at idle but when you put any throttle to it under load it backfires. I am wondering if it's a vacuum advance issue.

Have you looked at the timing curve.

What is the initial (idle) timing set at?

Is the carb's accelerator pump setup right?

Is your distributor out of phase? Are you igniting on the exhaust stroke?

Sounds like the timing is late. Is the vacuum advance working?
