New Camshaft
I was hoping someone could help out with this. I just put a new Summit Cam(285/.456 lift) and lifters in my 70 302, I also put in new valve springs from Trick Flow (115.0@1.700, Open 285.0@1.200, 340 rate, coil bind 1.113). My question is, are the valve springs pressure too much for the cam break in period. I have seen some online videos that suggest that the lighter the spring, the better. I just don't want to screw up my new cam. Would I be okay with this combination? Thanks.

Are they single or dual springs? They seem a bit overkill for that cam IMO...

They are double springs with what looks like a shorter spring inside. When I purchased the cam the tech at Summit indicated that they (the springs) are recommended. I am pretty ignorant as far as springs are concerned. I was going to check the stock ones at a local machine shop on Monday, if they are sound, I may just put those back in. Thanks.

If they are dual then you can take the inner out for break in, then replace it after break in... Kind of hard to tell without the part number, you got retainers as well...?

Yes, I replaced the springs, retainers and seals. Just being extra cautious since I haven't done this in a while. Unfortunately, I also changed the wiring harness, so I need to verify that everything will fire. Thanks for the reply.

Are you sure they are dual springs or just a single spring with a flat dampner in side the larger spring

It helps a lot to have part numbers on this stuff to answer questions:
Is this camshaft Part Number: SUM-1799 (or SUM-K30032)
Are the springs Part Number: TFS-16942-16
If so then springs say they are single springs.
The cam is a single pattern, which would not be my choice for most Fords, and it is also VERY mild: with a 204 @.050 / .456 and I don't think it needs very strong springs.
I think I'd run either new stock springs or Edelbrock springs with that cam (In fact, I'd probably run the Edelbrock cam instead.)
