F250 with f100 brakes and nine inch rear
I have a good f100 front suspension with disk brakes and a good nine inch rear with good drum brakes. And a f250 with bad brakes . Just looking for opinions sould i rebuild the f250 stuff or put on the f100 stuff. The truck may be used to pull a travel trailer sometimes but mostly just normal commuting. Also i have nice wheels and tires for the f100 stuff. How much towing capability would i be giving up.

Personally I'd stick with the 3/4 ton setup even if the trailer towing is only occasional. But that's just my

I'd just repair what you have and not do such a large conversion to essentially downgrade your trucks capabilities.

Re: F250 with f100 brakes and nine inch rear
Jeez.. that would be alot of work for not much gain... and as previously stated the down version bastardizes the drivetrain configuration. Do the sane thing and repair the 250's brake system.

Re: F250 with f100 brakes and nine inch rear
Is there a disk brake setup that will work for the 250. I will be replacing almost everything anyway. Or will the 4 wheel drums work as good. I was only considering the f100 stuff because i know it to be in working order and i already own it.

F250s came from the factory with front disc brakes so it wouldn't be hard too hard to convert. I think it started in '68 but I'm not positive about that. I've even seen articles about putting discs on the rear but that's a whole 'nother thread.

'67-'72 Bumpside F100s didn't get factory front disc brakes. Starting in 1968 ('68-'72), F250s and F350s were available with (optional) front disc brakes.
Beginning in 1973, all Dentside F100s through F350s got factory front discs (power brakes was optional). Dentside front disc brake suspensions are interchangeable onto Bumpside trucks.

The only two parts that absolutely HAVE to come from a donor are the anchor brackets (the circular piece with two 'arms' that the caliper mounts to, and the dust shield. Everything else can be purchased new.
Here's how I did mine:
http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... disc+brake
I haven't done the rears yet.
robroy has also done excellent write ups when he did both front discs and rear drums on his:
http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... rs#p375169
http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... er#p463261
Note: robroy's truck has 2-1/2" rear brakes. Depending on the weight rating of yours, you could have 2 or 2-1/2" rear brakes. This number refers to the width of the brake shoe. Drums for the two are not interchangeable.
I would not swap F100 running gear onto your truck. You would be degrading your trucks capabilities and definitely lowering your towing capacity.

That is on 2wd's, 4x4's did not have the option of disc brakes until 76, I believe, but if you are running a 2wd there are many more options.ultraranger wrote:'67-'72 Bumpside F100s didn't get factory front disc brakes. Will the caliper brakets and dust sheild from a dent side work or do the spindles need replacing

Re: F250 with f100 brakes and nine inch rear
That is correct that this applies to 2WD trucks and Dentside 4x4s didn't get factory front discs until 1976. Since I have a '69 2WD F100, I tend to think in terms of 2WD and not 4WD.Madman wrote:That is on 2wd's, 4x4's did not have the option of disc brakes until 76, I believe, but if you are running a 2wd there are many more options.ultraranger wrote:'67-'72 Bumpside F100s didn't get factory front disc brakes. They will work fine.M-100 wrote:Will the caliper brakets and dust sheild from a dent side work or do the spindles need replacing
Be aware, however, that in 1972 after serial number M80,001 that changes were made to the internals of the calipers, and the brake hose is of a different diameter where it attaches to the caliper than was used before the change. So caliper internals and brake hoses will not interchange between the two (pre and post M80,001), but the calipers from a dent will bolt up and work fine on a bump IF you use the dent brake hose. When I did mine, I didn't even have to change the brake hose bracket on the frame.

No worries UltraRanger, nor was that a shot on your knowledge, just wanted to ensure all aspects of the question were addressed. I am the same way, but I tend to think in terms of 4x4's more than 2wds!ultraranger wrote:That is correct that this applies to 2WD trucks and Dentside 4x4s didn't get factory front discs until 1976.
