Carb problems?
We have a major malfunction somewhere: here's whats going on: almost ready to put the truck on the road after a year of rebuilding. Engine 240/300 , carbed ( I built an adapter and installed a Rochester 2 jet on it ). Has been running great for about 9 months while doing all other repairs. We relocated gas tank to the back of frame ( installed new plastic tank ) still ran fine. About 2 weeks ago all of a sudden started idling rough, backfiring through tail pipe and would not run. re-gapped points, replaced coil , replaced fuel pump, replaced fuel filter, replaced plugs, all to no avail. Distributor is a rebuilt unit. pulled carb, took back to the guy who rebuilt, found trash and water. Dropped tank, cleaned, drained replaced. Replaced what hard lines we did not the first time, replaced rubber lines, new filter, installed new 10gal fuel cranked up...... same crapp. backfiring , idle rough, run like crapp. I am at a loss for what to do next. suggestions. ?????

Re: Carb problems?
either there is stuff still in the carb somewhere or try popping in a new condenser. The new ones are so awful its really hard to tell some fella to go diggin into some other component until you know its not a defective condenser. which are very cheap.literally.

Re: Carb problems?
Found problem with carb. In the bottom of the accelerator pump housing is a small ball check. The ball was out of place and held there by the spring. Got the thing running again. I guess when the rebuilder cleaned and re-assembled he got the ball in the wrong place. It is still running rough, I have a Pertronix Ingnitor points replacement kit on the way.

Re: Carb problems?
Be wary of the Pertronix. I went through 2 in 9 months on my '64 Fairlane. I'm installing a Duraspark ignition from a '78 Mustang II in her now. She doesn't seem to like the points. I put the Duraspark in my truck and drove it trouble free for years before starting my build project.

Re: Carb problems?
pertronix has fixed the problem so far. we have about 500-600 miles on the truck thus far with no ignition troubles.

Re: Carb problems?
OK, sargentrs I have now replaced the pertronix once and the second one is dead. Have double checked the wiring plus we have been running their coil. So I am done and moving to a Distributor out of a '90 F150 we pulled an engine out of. Anyone know where I can access a wring diagram for the pig tail coming off of the ignition module so I can wire this thing in to a '69 ?

Re: Carb problems?
Yeah, same thing happened to me. What engine was in the '90 F150 that will swap distributors into your '69? Or did I miss an engine swap in your thread?tnab1970 wrote:OK, sargentrs I have now replaced the pertronix once and the second one is dead. Here's what you can get from Rockauto
Distributor (Cardone 842669 $42.79): http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/ford ... om+URL+%2F
Ignition Box (Motorcraft DY893 $35): http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/ford ... e%2B%28icm
Then all you need is wiring. You can make your own or buy one for about $100 https://www.summitracing.com/parts/aww-500918/overview/ unless you can find one from any mid-70s to mid-80s Ford car or truck. I stick with the earlier carbureted models. Newer usually starts messing with emissions and fuel injection, etc. I made my own harness and wired mine with a 12V relay using the stock coil + wire as the trigger source to pull a straight 12v from the battery to the coil and ignition box. Here's a diagram modified to incorporate the relay. I chose to buy the wire, connectors, etc and make my own but would have come out just as cheap if I had bought that harness from Summit.

Re: Carb problems?
its got the 4.9 / 300 just like in the '69 . am I mistaken in thinking that the distributor will just plug in? I know ill have issues with the wiring similar to the Duraspark but I have all the parts just need to know what to do with the wires that go to the EEC.
this is what I have on hand off of the truck we scrapped.
