identify steering wheel year

Post by StacyRay70 »

Hi all. Having a hard time with this, how do I identify what year model my steering column/wheel is? I have purchased an aftermarket steering wheel kit that came with an adapter, but apparently the VIN number I have for my truck isn't correct. VIN number tells me I have a 72 but the pics I've looked at on here are not what I have. Apparently mine is 70 or before, but I've contacted the supplier and he says that each year from 67-70 would have a different adapter. I have a 17" diameter wheel and it is about 6" deep. Only number I can find on the wheel itself has P 10 X.

Any thoughts? What would be a good next step?

A good next step is to post a picture of the steering wheel and your truck. Another good step is to visually compare your parts with what is supposed to be installed. Also compare your door tag's VIN with the frame VIN. You likely have a Frankentruck... welcome to the club.

67-70s use a three-spoke, 71-77s have a thick, single horizontal pad, and 78-79 have a horizontal bar where the ends drop as it merges with the rim.

I suggest ordering catalogs from NPD, Dennis Carpenter, and Mac's Antique Autos for pictures and diagrams which illustrate year-to-year differences. The prices also allow comparison of street and retail prices.

About a third of the way down are the steering wheel variations. http://www.fordification.com/tech/67-72ID_01.htm

I believe Franken-truck is gonna be my word of the day. Comparing different identifiers on mine with identifiers on FORDification.com, I believe the vin says I have a 72, the grill seems to be 68, the gauge cluster 67, the tail lights/reflectors 70-72. Lol. I love this truck! :woohoo:
So, I'm gonna post some pics as soon as I can this week.

I think I finally figured out how to post pictures on here. Maybe y'all can help me with identifying the year model of the steering wheel. Do I need to add more pictures? The VIN calls it a 1972 F100, but the parts point to different years. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you getting your VIN number from the door tag? The original VIN is also stamped on the top of the frame rail, in front of the shock tower. That's the most real VIN you'll find. People commonly swap cab, doors, beds, fenders, etc but a full frame swap is rare. That steering wheel is of the 67-70 variety.

Hi sargentrs. The VIN # I have came from a tag mounted on the driver door frame. Ive tried to read the VIN # on the top of the frame under the starter, but its apparently been sanded down so much that I can't read it. Any other tricks I can try? :?

You do have a combination of truck parts. The grille is from 68 the hood is from 71-72 that's due to the trim on the lip of the hood.
The trim was not offered before 71.

The hood lip moulding was standard from 70-72.

The steering wheel is 67-70.
More than likely it is on the corresponding steering column. I don't know why the supplier you are dealing with would have a different adapter for each year of 67-70. I would think they would all be the same.
There is a difference in the columns, you can put a early wheel on a later column if you grind down the center mounting bolt. I don't know if you can put a later wheel on an early column.

My 68 is also a Frankentruck. I have a later column and wheel. The tie rods are later style as well. I think the PO used a 72 front end in order to get the power steering, or maybe it is just what he had available.
