Is the e brake supposed to have a spring on it?

Post by Canonman67 »

Maybe it's a stupid question cause none of the bumps I've looked at ratchet like most of that era do, but I noticed that on the side opposite the mechanism there seems to be a place for a spring which would keep the pawl engaged when pushing on the pedal. Are they supposed to have one? Thanks for any input it's appreciated.

I don't know what year truck you have but most have no spring on the pedal or lever. The spring return is on the emergency brake lever in the rear drum

It's a '70 but I don't know where the rear end is from. If I remember the rear end is a Dana 44 but I'm not positive and the truck isn't here to check. The parking brake is one of the issues that I want to fix while I have it torn down though.

When I pulled the cable and pedal assembly out of the '71 I found it DID have a spring but I don't think it does much good. Image

I guess I need to play with this a bit more.

Mine has spring but it's around that shaft in your photo. Pulling the handle out compresses it, letting go extends it. It's more just to return the handle to it's position than the pedal. The pedal is returned, when released, by the spring back at the equalizer assembly behind the cab.
