69 f250 brake woes

Post by 66f250cs »

I have a 69 F250 with power disc front brakes and rear drums. Bought this truck a couple of months ago and the brakes have been bad from day 1. The brake dash light was on when I got the truck. Removing MC cap, the front compartment was dry. I added brake fluid and the fluid disappeared in a few days. I determined that I had a bad wheel cylinder left rear and a broken line to it. I fixed that but, still had lousy brakes. I jumped to the front and did some work there (see below) then jumped back to the right rear. Still have lousy brakes.
What I've done.
Front; New/reman calipers, hardware, hoses (from hard pipe to caliper) new pads. New cup and cones and seals. Successfully bled both sides. No leaks. MC maintains level.
Rear; Drums were resurfaced. New shoes, hardware kit, cup and cones and seals. New retaining rings at end of axle and axle gaskets. New wheel cylinders (both) and piping from rubber hose bulkhead located on diff housing. No leaks. Successfully bled both sides. MC maintains level. Good peddle pressure.
Problem; slowing from moderate speed, I have shoe to drum noise. I have replaced drum brakes before but find this noise this time objectionable and abnormal. Coming to a stop, the noise sounds like the noise you would get if the shoes were grease soaked. (Had this problem on my 86 F250 due to bad axle seals.) Still having problem and noise when coming to complete stop in reverse.
I am very fussy when doing my work. The shoes and pads were spotless when I buttoned everything up. The dash brake light is on and that is on my list to get fixed. My procedure is going to be crack the rear line at MC (for front brakes) to hopefully get the piston to center. Option two; open a bleed screw on one of the calipers to get the piston to move to center. I need my gal to help, for peddle pressure.
Any comments would be appreciated. Kinda new here, great site by the way.

Ugh. I feel really stupid. Found my problem with crappy braking and grinding noise. I put one of the front pads on backwards. Metal to rotor and pad to piston. Don't know how I did this but I did. Minimal scoring to rotor surface. Switched pad around, no more brake issues.
