Disc brake setup
I know this has been asked about a million times but I can not find anything anywhere.
I want to convert my 70 F100 to disc with as much original parts as possible. I have a local junk yard around me that has a bunch of these old trucks around but not all on one truck so I don't want to miss a part I need.
Thank you
Jeff

Re: Disc brake setup
No '67-'72 F100 came from the factory with front disc brakes.
If you want front discs from a donor truck, you'll have to pull the parts from a '73-'79 F100 or from a '75-'79 F150.
I have front discs on my '69 F100 from a '77 F100 and a dual-diaphragm brake booster from a '75 F350.

Since you asked on this site you should get a link to this site. And not for a link to the darkside. Read this. http://www.fordification.com/tech/discbrakes01.htm

What's everyi thought on the aftermarket disc setup that you don't have to change your factory spindel.

Re: Disc brake setup
I used a set of spindles and dust shields from a '74. Drop in replacement and the rotors, calipers, etc are available at your local parts stores.

Re: Disc brake setup
That is correct. '73-'74 used the same king pins and I-beams as our trucks. '75 and up had different king pins and I-beams. I found a set of spindles on Craigslist and bought the dust shields NOS from Green Sales and Miller Obsolete. Went ahead and put new king pins and bushings in while I had it apart. Everything else I bought from O'reillys, or have it in my "wish list" in my account, but it's selectedand available. Already installed the hub/rotors and new bearings and seals. Just need to get the calipers and hoses. If you're using a donor for the spindles, grab the brake hose brackets off the frame while you're at it. They're different too. You can see my progress in my project thread in my sig.ntcmpjg wrote:So I don't need the whole I beam just the spindles and dust shield and caliber bracket?sargentrs wrote:I used a set of spindles and dust shields from a '74. Re: Disc brake setup
I got the whole front frame section/suspension from a '77 F100 when I got the parts to convert my '69 F100.ntcmpjg wrote:Cut a whole front frame section from a 1976 F100 ranger today
I cannot tell in your photos if you have it or not but, you'll need the drag link for that setup. From the photos, the hole in the spindle for the outer tie rod is pretty rusty, which looks like maybe the drag link/tie rods were robbed some time ago.
Looks like the engine perches are freshly cut. I cant tell for sure but, if they were small-block perches, you could have easily gotten $50.00 (or more) for them.
The disc/drum brake combination valve you have is a Kelsey-Hayes cast iron unit. It's the very same style brake valve that was on my donor disc brake front end. The valve may or may not be functional. There are some rebuild parts available from Muscle Car Research.com for that style valve. However, all the internal rebuild seals for it are not available (no complete rebuild kits are available for it).
If you're planning to install a power steering gear box (Saginaw for example), be sure the pitman arm is attached. It has a lower drop/offset than the pitman arm on a manual steering gear box.
The front disc brake/I-beam/radius arm components I got had about the same amount of dirt, grease, oil and rust on them, when I brought them home from the wrecking yard.
After pressure washing.

Left side removed from frame.

After I had bead blasted and painted some of the items.

A couple of photos after I got the suspension/disc brake parts installed.

I forgot to mention the combination valve! Be sure and get it too (3rd pic in ultraranger's post). Thanks for the reminder, Steve!sargentrs wrote:If you're using a donor for the spindles, grab the brake hose brackets off the frame while you're at it.

Are you talking about the tie rods? Yes, they should work.

Re: Disc brake setup
After researching a little, I see I mislead you about the tie rods.www.fordification.com/tech/str-susp_variations.htm If you are using your original steering gear box, then you can use your original drag link. The angle of the pitman arm being the deciding factor. However the tie rod boss on the '76 is thicker so your '70 outer tie rod ends won't work with the '76 spindles. At least those are cheaper than buying a drag link.
