Advice on goin to posi and disc brakes

Post by Bowman-428 »

Hi guys,
Ok after pulling off the trailer and taking it down the road for some Duke boys fun I have the '69 down to a bare frame .I need to know the best/most economical way to get posi-traction, it has original 9'' , tag still in tact 3.25 gears . What gears you fellas recommend ? It has a 360, gonna do a rebuild, accepting advice in this area also (bought it as a 428 but after tear down and stroke measurement low and behold its a 360 ! lol ,, no worries didn't have much faith in it being a 428 anyway )Also want to go to power disc brakes ,plan on lowering 4'' with DJM kit to match CV front.
Thanks in advance , Jeff

Your truck will have 28-spline axles. This means you would have to locate a 28-spline Traction-Lok differential from a wrecking yard donor or purchase one brand new. They come in two versions: 2-pinion or stronger 4-pinion differentials.

1969 was the first year of the Ford Traction-Lok differential ('57-'68 was the Ford Equalok). If you are lucky enough to find a wrecking yard TL differential, stay away from the '69 model Traction-Lok. It is weaker and more prone to breakage than the '70-'86 version.

...and, there are no 'posi' (short for, 'positraction') differentials in a Ford. That's a General Motors trademark name/reference.

For front discs, any '73-'79 F100 or '75-'79 F150 front suspension/discs will swap over.

I installed '77 F100 front I-beams/radius arms/discs onto my '69 SWB F100.

I purchased the PowerTrax No Slip for mine http://www.summitracing.com/parts/pwt-9 ... /overview/ Installation was simple. Haven't actually driven with it yet but it has good reviews.

Most economical is to weld the spiders or install a mini spool. I recommend neither.

Personally I'd find a late model rear and drop it in vs. do any aftermarket conversion on the 9" for disc brakes. You'll also most likely end up with a posi rear if you shop smart. I'd also leave the 3.25 gears in place if you don't plan on installing an OD transmission.

It is hard to beat a Detroit Locker.....mechanical, dependable, great history, and used in some of Ford's premier vehicles of the past. My :2cents:

Thanks Guys,
I think i will go with an Explorer 8.8 with Traction-Lok , gets me what i'm after at a reasonable price ( junk yard says $200 ), between the PowerTrax and Disc brake kit it's a no brainer money wise. I'm unsure about mods I have to make, but hey that's what I signed up for when I decided to do this build, know of any threads on this swap ?
Thanks Again !!
