Rag joint/steering coupler replacement '68 F250

Post by Greg95472 »

Just got a '68 F250 2wd pickup. Bad rag joint with a lot of play in steering. Removed the bolts on old rag joint and have a complete new part to replace it with. My question is how do I obtain enough clearance to slide old part back from power steering assembly and put new part on? Do I get the spacing by removing power steering box or by removing steering wheel column? Just need an inch or two to be able to place new part in but not sure how to do it.

It would probably be easiest to unbolt the column and slide it back.

I recently did this change to my 71 F100. That's really the only way to do it. There's a bracket on the engine side of the firewall, and then a bracket that hold the column to the dash. You don't need to remove all of those bolts, just loosen them enough to pull it towards you a few inches as you sit in the drivers seat, once the rag joint old rag joint is completely taken off, of course...
